USMNT’s Carter-Vickers Facing Lengthy Injury Layoff, World Cup Hopes in Doubt

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND – United States international defender Cameron Carter-Vickers is facing a significant spell on the sidelines after suffering an Achilles injury during Celtic’s Europa League match against Sturm Graz on Thursday. Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed the news Friday, estimating the 27-year-old center back would be out for three to five months.

“He looks like he’s done his Achilles, which could be anywhere between three and five months,” Rodgers told Sky Sports. “We just await confirmation of that but it’s not great news.”

The injury occurred during Celtic’s 2-1 victory, with Rodgers lamenting the inability to substitute Carter-Vickers due to already using all available substitution slots. “We wanted to take off Cameron but we could only make one substitution in the second half. Ideally, we would have taken him off,” Rodgers said.

The lengthy recovery period casts a shadow over Carter-Vickers’ chances of making the USMNT squad for the 2026 World Cup, which is less than two years away. He was part of the 2022 World Cup roster and has earned 19 caps for his country.

This injury adds to the woes for USMNT fans, with news also surfacing that Bayer Leverkusen’s Malik Tillman will be out for another two weeks.

In Carter-Vickers’ absence, fellow U.S. international Auston Trusty may see an increased role with Celtic.
