FLORHAM PARK, NJ – The New York Jets family is in mourning after the passing of legendary center Nick Mangold, who died Saturday night at the age of 41 due to complications from kidney disease.
Mangold, drafted 29th overall by the Jets in 2006, was a cornerstone of the team’s offensive line for over a decade, earning seven Pro Bowl selections and two First-Team All-Pro honors. His consistency, strength, and leadership were instrumental in the Jets’ success during his tenure, which included multiple playoff appearances and AFC Championship Game berths.
“Nick was more than a legendary center,” said Jets Chairman Woody Johnson. “He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.”
Mangold had recently shared his battle with chronic kidney disease, a condition he had been diagnosed with in 2006, and was undergoing dialysis treatments while awaiting a kidney transplant.
“In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease,” Mangold wrote in a letter. “I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time.”
Teammates and coaches remember Mangold as a player who exemplified professionalism, humility, and inclusion. His impact extended beyond the field, forging strong bonds with teammates and becoming a beloved figure in the Jets community.
“Teammates are the closest thing to family,” said former Jets linebacker Bart Scott. “Nick represented the best of us in regard to professionalism, humility, and performance…I’ll miss my friend until we meet again.”
Mangold was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2022 alongside fellow stars D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Darrelle Revis. He was also recently named among the initial nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026.
Nick Mangold is survived by his wife Jenny, and their four children Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte.
