Hong Kong Court Sentences Three to Prison for Bomb Plots During 2019-2020 Protests
HONG KONG – A Hong Kong court has handed down significant prison sentences to three individuals convicted of involvement in bomb plots that occurred in 2019 and 2020. The incidents, which included the detonation of a homemade bomb in a hospital toilet and the discovery of explosive devices at a railway station, were allegedly part of a broader effort to pressure the government into closing Hong Kong’s borders at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lukas Ho, identified as the mastermind behind the plots, received the harshest sentence of 18 years. Judge Johnny Chan stated that Ho displayed an “inflated ego,” demonstrated no remorse for his actions, and posed a continuing “risk to public safety.” Chan emphasized the need for deterrence in his sentencing decision, prioritizing public safety over Ho’s potential for rehabilitation.
Ho’s co-defendants, Lee Ka-pan and Cheung Ka-Chun, were each sentenced to 16 years and eight months in prison. The judge granted them a slight reduction in their sentences, recognizing them as first-time offenders.
The three men reportedly remained impassive as their sentences were read, exchanging smiles with family and friends in the public gallery before being led away by guards.
The incidents caused no casualties. Last month, a jury acquitted five other individuals who were also charged in connection with the same case.
