Delhi Doctor Raped by Imposter Posing as Army Officer, Another Doctor’s Suicide in Maharashtra Highlights Alarming Trend
New Delhi/Satara, India – October 23, 2023 – A doctor working at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi has been allegedly raped by a man who misrepresented himself as an Army officer. Separately, in Maharashtra, a doctor tragically took her own life after accusing a police officer and another man of rape and harassment. These two incidents have brought to the surface a troubling trend of sexual assault against doctors.
In the Delhi case, police sources reported that the accused, identified as Aarav from Chhatarpur, Delhi, used Instagram to initiate contact with the doctor. Posing as a Lieutenant posted in Jammu and Kashmir, he exchanged messages and photos of himself in an ‘Army uniform’ with the victim. The deception led to an in-person meeting at the doctor’s home in Masjid Moth earlier this month, where he allegedly drugged her food and then raped her. The doctor filed a complaint on October 16 at the Safdarjung Enclave Police Station. A raid on multiple locations in Chhatarpur led to Aarav’s arrest. During interrogation, Aarav confessed to purchasing the Army uniform specifically to deceive the doctor.
In Maharashtra’s Satara district, a doctor was found dead in a hotel room in Phaltan town on Thursday night. The doctor, originally from Beed district, left behind notes alleging that Sub Inspector Gopal Badane raped her over a five-month period, and another man, Prashant Bankar, mentally harassed her. Badane surrendered to the Phaltanpur Rural Police Station on Saturday evening and Bankar was apprehended earlier that day.
These cases highlight the vulnerability of professionals and underscore the need for stricter online safety measures and robust legal recourse for victims of sexual assault and harassment. Authorities are currently investigating both cases, and further details are expected as investigations proceed.
