New Zealand, England – New Zealand secured a convincing four-wicket victory over England in the first ODI of their three-match series, chasing down a target of 224 with 13.2 overs to spare. The win, achieved in 36.4 overs, puts the Black Caps 1-0 up in the series.

Daryl Mitchell anchored the chase with an unbeaten 78 off 91 balls, supported by Michael Bracewell’s quickfire 51. Brydon Carse was the pick of the England bowlers, taking 3 wickets for 45 runs.

Earlier in the day, England were reeling at 33-5 before a remarkable century from Harry Brook salvaged their innings. Brook’s stunning 135 off 101 balls, along with a valuable 46 from Jamie Overton, propelled England to a total of 223 all out in 35.2 overs. Zak Foulkes starred with the ball for New Zealand, claiming 4 wickets for 41 runs.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner praised his team’s performance, highlighting the impact of their opening bowlers and Foulkes’ impressive swing bowling. He acknowledged Brook’s brilliance but emphasized the importance of taking wickets throughout the innings.

England captain Harry Brook conceded that his team needed to find ways to take wickets in the middle overs and apply more pressure on the New Zealand batsmen. He also felt the team may need to adjust their tactics for applying pressure on the bowlers.

The second ODI is scheduled for Wednesday at Hamilton.
