Mudslide in Idukki Claims Life, Injures One; Highway Construction Blamed
Idukki, Kerala – October 26, 2025: Tragedy struck Kumbanpara, near Adimaly in Idukki district, late Saturday when a mudslide engulfed a home, killing one resident and severely injuring his wife. Biju was pronounced dead at a local hospital after a grueling overnight rescue operation, while his wife, Sandhya, is currently receiving treatment.
The incident, triggered by days of heavy rainfall, occurred at the Kumbanpara Laksham Veedu colony around 8 p.m. after the couple returned home from a relief camp to retrieve important documents and valuables. Their home was partially buried under piles of sodden mud, trapping them inside.
Emergency responders, including the Fire and Rescue Department, NDRF, police, and local volunteers, faced immense challenges as they worked tirelessly through the night. Sandhya was rescued around 9:45 p.m., but reaching Biju proved far more difficult. He was finally extricated around 5 a.m. Sunday morning, showing scarce signs of life.
Residents are pointing fingers at the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), alleging that extensive excavation for the construction of the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway destabilized the area, leading to the mudslide. They accuse NHAI contractors of neglecting public safety.
“The drastic excavation of mud for the construction of the Koch-Dhanushkodi National Highway had caused the mishap. They accused the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) contractors of showing scarce concern for public safety.”
Water Resources Minister Rosy Augustine, Idukki MP Dean Kuriakose, and Idukki District police Chief KM Sabu Mathew oversaw the rescue operations. The government has announced an investigation and has requested a report from the NHAI regarding the incident and the allegations against them.
This incident follows another mudslide in the same area on Friday, which caused significant traffic disruptions. District authorities have relocated residents to a relief camp at the Adimali Government School. The tragedy highlights growing concerns about the environmental impact of infrastructure projects in the region and the need for stricter safety regulations and accountability.
