Tamil Nadu Farmers Demand Increased Compensation for Lightning Strike Victims

CUDDALORE, October 26, 2025 – The Federation of All Farmers’ Associations in Tamil Nadu is pressing the state government to significantly increase the compensation offered to the families of four women killed by lightning near Thittagudi on October 16th. At a meeting held in Ariyanachi on Saturday, the association passed a resolution demanding a solatium of ₹50 lakh for each family, along with a job for one family member.

The association leaders, including M. Arjunan, P.S. Palaniappan, and R. Ram Pandian, argued that the currently offered ₹5 lakh compensation is inadequate, especially when compared to the ₹10 lakh compensation provided to the victims of the recent Kallakurichi hooch tragedy and the Karur stampede. They described the compensation amount as a “shock to the farming community.”

“The lives lost are invaluable, and the government must recognize the hardship faced by these families,” said a spokesperson for the Federation.

In addition to the increased compensation, the Association is also urging the government to provide crop insurance for maize farmers in Thittakudi who suffered significant crop damage in 2024.
