“Residents have been planting saplings on this divider and pathway for some time,” noted Namachivayam. “Some have matured into full-grown trees, while others have been lost to infrastructure projects. Nevertheless, we continue to keep the greening tradition alive.”
The spirit of community-driven greening is deeply rooted in Adyar. M. Sundararaman, an 85-year-old Sashtri Nagar resident, exemplifies this dedication. Sundararaman collects seeds, raises seedlings, and plants them in parks and public areas. His efforts have resulted in 15 poovarasan trees flourishing in a park on Gangai Street in Besant Nagar.
The late Dr. M. Parthasarathy, an orthopedic surgeon, also stands as a source of inspiration, having passionately led tree-planting exercises across Adyar and beyond before his passing on May 11, 2025. His loss is deeply felt by the community of “green beings” that continues his work.
