HUBBALLI, INDIA – October 23, 2025 – Deepavali celebrations in the Haveri district of Karnataka were overshadowed by tragedy as three men lost their lives in separate incidents related to the traditional “Kobri Hori” events. These events, a common feature of Deepavali festivities, involve participants attempting to snatch copra (dried coconut) tied around the necks of bulls.

The victims have been identified as Chandrashekhar Kodihalli, 70, Ghanisab Mohammed Hussain Bankapur, 75, and Bharat Ramappa Hingameri, 24, all residents of Haveri district.

Chandrashekhar Kodihalli was struck by a stray bull after a Kobri Hori event at Veerabhadreshwar Temple in Haveri. Ghanisab Mohammed Hussain Bankapur was fatally injured when a bull panicked during a procession in Devihosur village and charged towards him. Bharat Ramappa Hingameri was knocked down by a bull while watching a Kobri Hori event in Tilavalli village.

All three men sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the District Hospital in Haveri, where they were pronounced dead.

Authorities have registered three separate cases at Haveri Town, Haveri Rural, and Adur police stations. An investigation is underway, as confirmed by the Superintendent of Police of Haveri.
