Thu Oct 23 17:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Vegas Beats Out NYC as Top Thanksgiving Destination Despite Soaring Prices
Las Vegas, NV – Forget cozy gatherings at home; this Thanksgiving, many Americans are opting for bright lights and bustling streets. Las Vegas has surprisingly topped New York City as the most popular travel destination for Thanksgiving 2024, according to data from HotelPlanner, a travel tech company. Despite skyrocketing prices, Sin City is attracting 56% of travelers, a 13% increase in popularity compared to last year. New York City follows closely behind, with a 7% increase in bookings.
“Las Vegas is well-practiced at handling tourist surges, with a larger supply of hotel rooms to cope with demand,” explained Tim Gunnstone of HotelPlanner. Chicago, San Francisco, and Boston round out the top five Thanksgiving destinations.
However, the allure of Vegas comes with a hefty price tag. Hotel prices have surged 23% since last year, with the average room costing around $218 per night. Visitors are also feeling the pinch from inflated food and beverage costs.
“The price gouging in Las Vegas is out of control,” complained TikTok user Christian in a viral video.
While Vegas prices may be shocking, New York City is arguably even more expensive. Hotel costs in the Big Apple have jumped a staggering 53% compared to 2024. “Rates have gone up more in New York, probably because it has around 30,000 less hotel rooms to sell. It’s a case of supply and demand,” Gunnstone explained.
Travelers should also be aware of potential airport chaos due to the ongoing partial government shutdown. As House Majority Whip Tom Emmer warned, “Airports will be flooded with flight cancellations and delays amid the busiest time to travel all year.”
