Thu Oct 23 11:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Bhai Dooj Celebrated Across India Amidst Muhurat Concerns
New Delhi, [Date – Based on the text, assume a date in late October or early November 2025] – The festival of Bhai Dooj, a celebration of the bond between brothers and sisters, is being observed with fervor across India today. This auspicious occasion, also known as Yama Dwitiya, commemorates the day Lord Yamraj visited his sister Yamuna and received her blessings.
On this day, sisters apply a ’tilak’ (auspicious mark) on their brothers’ foreheads, praying for their longevity, prosperity, and protection. This year, however, the auspicious timing for the tilak ceremony coincides with a period considered inauspicious – Rahu Kaal.
According to astrological calculations, the ideal time for the tilak is between 1:13 PM and 3:28 PM. However, Rahu Kaal falls within this timeframe, specifically from 1:30 PM to 2:54 PM. This has raised concerns about the appropriate time to perform the ceremony.
Astrologer Dr. Arunesh Kumar Sharma has clarified that the influence of the auspicious muhurat outweighs the inauspiciousness of Rahu Kaal. He assures sisters that they can confidently proceed with the tilak ceremony during the designated auspicious time.
For those still apprehensive about performing the tilak during Rahu Kaal, alternative auspicious timings have been suggested:
- Abhijit Muhurat: 11:43 AM to 12:28 PM
- Godhuli Muhurat: 5:43 PM to 6:09 PM
Rituals and Customs:
On Bhai Dooj, brothers traditionally bathe in the Yamuna River (or pure water) and offer prayers to the moon. They then visit their sisters’ homes to receive the tilak. Sisters seat their brothers facing east or north, placing coconut, rice, and flowers in their hands, praying for their good fortune and long life. The tilak, made of roli (red powder) and rice, is applied, followed by the offering of sweets and an aarti (prayer with a lamp). Brothers, in turn, offer gifts, clothes, or money to their sisters as a token of appreciation. A meal prepared by the sister is also an important part of the tradition.
Prohibited Actions:
It is important to avoid arguments, negativity, anger, and arrogance on Bhai Dooj. Refrain from engaging in any inauspicious activities, consuming non-vegetarian food or alcohol. It is also considered auspicious to offer charity and assistance to those who come to your door seeking help.
