Michael J. Fox Reflects on ‘Back to the Future’ Journey in New Book, “Future Boy”
Beloved actor Michael J. Fox, known for his iconic roles in “Back to the Future” and “Family Ties,” is releasing a new book titled “Future Boy: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum.” The memoir, co-authored with his producing partner Nelle Fortenberry, delves into the chaotic period when Fox simultaneously filmed the hit movie and the popular sitcom.
In “Future Boy,” Fox reveals that Steven Spielberg initially wanted him for the role of Marty McFly, but scheduling conflicts led to Eric Stoltz being cast. After a month of filming, Stoltz was replaced by Fox, requiring him to juggle both projects.
The book also recounts Fox’s early struggles as a broke and hungry actor in Los Angeles before landing his breakthrough role in “Family Ties.” Now, Fox looks back with gratitude, especially in light of his battle with Parkinson’s disease. He emphasizes the importance of gratitude and perseverance. Fox is currently focused on his work with The Michael J. Fox Foundation, which has raised over $2 billion for Parkinson’s research.
Notably, “Future Boy” also details a meeting between Fox and Eric Stoltz, the original Marty McFly. After decades of silence, the two actors met in Fox’s office in the fall of 2024 for a cordial conversation, sharing a mutual appreciation for their craft. While the specifics of their discussion remain private at Stoltz’s request, Fox describes the meeting as positive and enlightening.
