Wed Oct 22 06:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Fiona Corcoran Honored as Cork Person of the Month for Aid to Chernobyl Victims and Ukrainian War Effort
Cork, Ireland – Fiona Corcoran has been named Cork Person of the Month for October in recognition of her tireless dedication to aiding victims of the Chernobyl disaster and, more recently, those impacted by the war in Ukraine. For over two decades, Corcoran has been at the helm of the Greater Chernobyl Cause, an organization that has profoundly impacted the lives of vulnerable populations across the former Soviet Union, including Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
Motivated by the devastating Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986, Corcoran dedicated herself to alleviating the suffering caused by nuclear radiation and its aftermath. Initially focusing on Chernobyl, her work expanded to encompass other regions impacted by Soviet-era nuclear testing, particularly in Kazakhstan. The Greater Chernobyl Cause has since spearheaded the construction and renovation of orphanages and hospices, provided essential appliances and medical equipment, and offered refuge and adoption opportunities to vulnerable children.
Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, Corcoran has been instrumental in coordinating humanitarian aid efforts for those affected by the conflict. The Greater Chernobyl Cause is actively delivering food, clothing, and medicine, building shelter, and providing critical medical and mental health assistance to millions of displaced Ukrainians. Corcoran herself traveled to Ukraine in February, tending to injured soldiers in military hospitals and supporting families in refugee villages.
“Fiona has been a driving force in Irish efforts to help the most vulnerable in former Soviet Union countries for over two decades,” said Manus O’Callaghan, who presented the award. “Her commitment to this cause is commendable, particularly regarding victims of the ongoing war in Ukraine who have been deprived of peace, homes and security. In epitomising the Cork spirit of compassion and empathy, I am truly honoured to present her with this Cork Person of the Month award.”
Corcoran’s name will now be added to the list of monthly winners and will be considered for the prestigious Cork Person of the Year award at the annual Gala Awards Lunch in January 2026. Her recognition highlights the importance of continued support for victims of both historical and ongoing tragedies and the enduring impact of one person’s dedication to humanitarian aid.
