Wed Oct 22 03:40:00 UTC 2025: Jeff Tweedy and Sons Craft Ambitious “Twilight Override,” a Family Affair

CHICAGO, IL – In the spring of 2020, as the world began to shut down, Jeff Tweedy found himself on a road trip with his sons, Spencer and Sammy, a journey that sparked the creative flame for his latest project, the sprawling triple album “Twilight Override.” Five years in the making, the record is a collaborative effort with his sons, along with Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart of Finom, and guitarists Liam Kazar and James Elkington, marking a new chapter in Tweedy’s prolific career.

“Twilight Override” began taking shape following solo tours. The energy and vocal arrangements from live shows inspired him to bring the sound to life in the studio. The result is an ambitious 30-song collection that draws comparisons to The Clash’s “Sandinista!” for its scope and experimentation.

For Jeff Tweedy, collaboration is key. He’s consistently learning through new musical perspectives and methods, and always strives to grow with his fellow musicians. He enlisted Cate Le Bon to produce his 2023 album, “Cousin.” Sons, Sammy and Spencer, have also observed their father’s artistic approach and musical growth. Spencer notes a shift in his father’s creative process, focusing on emotion and process. Sammy sees their role as helping bring his dad’s songs to their final form, in part due to his and Spencer’s unique perspectives as young musicians.

The album showcases not just Jeff’s songwriting prowess but also the musical talents of his sons. Sammy’s synthesizer work adds a unique layer to the soundscapes, while Spencer’s drumming brings a “Big Pink-style” energy to the tracks.

Despite its length, Tweedy defends the album’s expansive nature. He hopes people will appreciate the experience of the album if they give it a chance. The project is a testament to the power of family, collaboration, and a willingness to embrace ambition. Jeff says that his sons encouraged him to follow his creative heart, not limiting the project due to arbitrary concerns about market demand.

“Twilight Override” is out now via dBpm Records.
