Basel, Switzerland – Eighteen-year-old Henry Bernet of Basel will face a tough challenge in his ATP Tour debut at the Swiss Indoors, drawing world number 19 Jakub Mensik in the first round. Mensik, a rising star from the Czech Republic, is seeded seventh in the tournament and is coming off a strong year, including a Masters 1000 victory in Miami where he defeated Taylor Fritz and Novak Djokovic in the final.
Bernet, currently ranked 479th in the world, received a wild card entry into the main draw. While the match against the towering Mensik (1.94m) presents a daunting task, the young Swiss player has “nothing to lose,” according to tournament organizers.
In other first-round action, veteran Stan Wawrinka, potentially playing his final tournament in Basel, will face Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic. While Kecmanovic is ranked higher, Wawrinka holds a previous victory over him from Indian Wells two and a half years ago.
The Swiss hopes also extend to the qualifying rounds. Rémy Bertola is one match away from joining the main draw after defeating Adrian Mannarino and will play Quentin Halys on Sunday for a spot in the main draw. Mika Brunold narrowly missed out on a similar upset, losing to Reilly Opelka in a close three-hour match after failing to convert six match points.
Adding further excitement to the tournament, top seed Taylor Fritz is set to clash with Valentin Vacherot, last week’s surprise Masters 1000 champion from Shanghai, in a highly anticipated first-round showdown. The Swiss Indoors promises a week of thrilling tennis action.
