Mon Oct 20 21:00:00 UTC 2025: From Buckhead Secessionist to Belgian Ambassador: Bill White Extends Olive Branch at Send-Off Dinner
Atlanta, GA – In a stunning display of reconciliation, Bill White, the former leader of the Buckhead City secession movement, was celebrated as President Trump’s incoming U.S. Ambassador to Belgium at a send-off dinner Wednesday night. The event, held at Bones steakhouse in Buckhead, was attended by a diverse group, including former adversaries like Kenyatta Mitchell, a top aide to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, and Fulton County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts, both of whom vocally opposed White’s efforts to split Buckhead from Atlanta.
Just two years ago, White declared Atlanta a “war zone” and accused city leadership of failing to address rising crime rates, spearheading a movement to create a separate “city of Buckhead City.” However, with Dickens’ election and subsequent efforts to reduce crime and unify the city, the secession movement fizzled.
At the dinner, White offered a markedly different tone, praising Dickens as “a good mayor and a good man.” He also acknowledged past conflicts but emphasized a shared commitment to promoting Atlanta and Georgia on the global stage. White plans to use his ambassadorship to strengthen ties between Atlanta and Brussels and encourage Belgian investment in Georgia.
Also honored at the event was Herschel Walker, Trump’s pick for Ambassador to the Bahamas, three years after his failed Senate bid. Walker, who also spoke at the dinner, emphasized his commitment to representing the country well.
While some remain skeptical of the sincerity behind White’s newfound civility, the event marked a remarkable transformation for the former political firebrand as he prepares for a sensitive diplomatic role that will require a newfound sense of diplomacy.
