Japan Set to Elect Ultraconservative Sanae Takaichi as First Female Prime Minister
Tokyo – Japan is poised to make history by electing Sanae Takaichi as its first female Prime Minister. The election, scheduled for today, October 21, 2025, comes after the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) forged a coalition agreement with the right-wing Japan Innovation Party (JIP).
Ms. Takaichi will succeed Shigeru Ishiba, whose brief tenure ended after the LDP suffered significant election losses. The alliance with JIP ensures her victory in the parliamentary vote, but the coalition still lacks a clear majority in both houses, potentially leading to instability.
At a signing ceremony, Ms. Takaichi emphasized the need for political stability to address economic and diplomatic challenges. The coalition agreement highlights her conservative views, focusing on a strong economy and assertive foreign policy.
The coalition was formed after the LDP’s long-standing partnership with the Komeito party dissolved due to concerns over scandals and differing views on Japan’s wartime past.
Once elected, Ms. Takaichi is expected to appoint a cabinet filled with allies of influential LDP figures. While JIP will not immediately assume ministerial positions, the partnership signals a shift to the right in Japanese politics.
Ms. Takaichi faces immediate pressure to address rising prices and stimulate the economy. Despite breaking gender barriers, she holds conservative views on gender equality, opposing same-sex marriage and separate surnames for married couples.
As a protégé of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, she is expected to continue his policies of strengthening the military and revising Japan’s pacifist constitution. However, the strength and longevity of her government remain uncertain due to the fragile coalition and pressing economic issues.
