Al Jazeera Documentary Unearths New Details in Killing of Hind Rajab, Family, and Rescue Team in Gaza
Gaza City – A new Al Jazeera documentary, “Ma Khafiya Aatham (Tip of the Iceberg),” has revealed previously unknown details surrounding the tragic killing of five-year-old Hind Rajab, her family, and the paramedics who attempted to save them in Gaza City in late January 2024. The documentary, produced in partnership with the Hind Rajab Foundation, challenges initial Israeli government claims about the incident.
Hind Rajab’s desperate pleas for help, made after her uncle, aunt, and three cousins were killed in their car, were widely circulated online. Initially, the Israeli government claimed no forces were present at the time of the attack, later suggesting the extensive bullet holes in the vehicle resulted from a firefight with Palestinian militants.
However, the documentary presents findings from Forensic Architecture, a research group at the University of London, which analyzed satellite imagery and audio from the day of the incident. The analysis reportedly showed only Israeli Merkava tanks in the vicinity and no evidence of any exchange of fire.
The documentary identifies Colonel Beni Aharon, commander of the 401 Armoured Brigade, as the overall commander of the tanks present. According to the Hind Rajab Foundation, which has already filed a criminal complaint against Colonel Aharon at the International Criminal Court (ICC), the “Vampire Empire” company, under Major Sean Glass of the 401st Brigade, was directly responsible for the killings and subsequent tampering with the crime scene. Major Sean Glass and Colonel Daniel Ella may also be responsible for the incident.
The “Vampire Empire” company, part of the 52nd Armoured Battalion, nicknamed “Ha-Bok’im (The Breachers),” allegedly was one of the first Israeli units to enter Gaza in October 2023 and has been involved in several lethal operations, including the destruction of hospitals. Itay Choukirkov, a dual Israeli-Argentine national and soldier in the company, is reportedly being sued in Argentina for his alleged role in the killings.
“The government of Israel does not like these campaigns financed by organizations supporting the Palestinians,” Israeli security expert Yossi Melman told Al Jazeera in the documentary. He added that such prosecutions are a concern not only for the Israeli army but also for its intelligence agencies.
The Hind Rajab Foundation is also pursuing legal action against individual Israeli soldiers, including Shimon Zuckerman, whose social media posts allegedly demonstrate genocidal intent.
