Ashwin Calls for Direct Communication Amidst Shami Selection Controversy

New Delhi: A selection dispute has erupted within the Indian cricket team following Mohammed Shami’s exclusion from recent tours. The controversy began after Shami questioned his omission, citing his Ranji Trophy availability as proof of his fitness. Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar responded by saying Shami’s fitness was in question prior to the England tour.

The situation escalated when Shami retorted, “Let him say whatever he wants. You’ve seen how I bowled.”

Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has weighed in on the matter, advocating for more direct communication between players and administrators. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin criticized the prevalence of “indirect speech” in Indian cricket, stating it breeds misunderstanding and fuels media speculation.

“Everything in Indian cricket runs on indirect speech,” Ashwin lamented, urging both players and administrators to adopt a more transparent approach. He highlighted Shami’s situation as a prime example, suggesting the fast bowler’s public comments stem from a lack of clarity regarding his selection.

Ashwin praised Agarkar’s handling of the situation, expressing hope that a direct conversation between the selector and Shami would take place. He emphasized the importance of treating players with “respect and dignity” and believes direct communication is crucial to resolve such issues effectively. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to comment officially on the matter.
