Orionid Meteor Shower to Peak This Week: Best Viewing Conditions Expected

Stargazers are in for a treat as the annual Orionid Meteor Shower reaches its peak this week, promising up to 20 meteors per hour under optimal conditions. The shower, caused by Earth passing through debris from Halley’s Comet, will be most visible in the early morning hours of October 21st-23rd, between 1:00 a.m. and dawn.

Experts say this year’s viewing conditions are excellent, thanks to a new moon on October 21st, which will ensure dark skies free from lunar interference. The best viewing spots will be in rural areas, away from city lights, with clear skies.

“Find a safe, dark location,” advises the American Meteor Society (AMS). “The darker your surroundings, the more meteors you’ll see. Lie back in a comfortable chair, facing roughly south and look about halfway up from the horizon.”

While the Orionids will be the main attraction, observers may also spot a few slower Taurid meteors, or swift ones from Gemini and Leo Minor, along with random “sporadic” meteors.

The AMS encourages citizen scientists to contribute to research by recording observations, including the shower association of each meteor and the faintest star visible. Data can be shared through the International Meteor Organization (IMO).

With clear skies predicted, the 2025 Orionid Meteor Shower is shaping up to be a spectacular celestial event.
