New Delhi, [Date – October 20, 2025] – As per Hindu tradition, Diwali, the festival of lights, is being celebrated today, marking the new moon (Amavasya) of the Kartik month. Astrologers and pandits across the nation have determined the most auspicious timings for the Lakshmi-Ganesh puja, a central ritual of the festival aimed at inviting prosperity and well-being into homes.
The most auspicious time for the Lakshmi and Ganesh puja falls between 7:08 PM and 8:18 PM, offering a duration of approximately one hour and eleven minutes for the prayers.
Additionally, the Pradosh Kaal, the twilight period, considered ideal for lighting diyas (oil lamps), extends from 5:46 PM to 8:18 PM. The Vrishabh Kaal, another significant time frame, will be from 7:08 PM to 9:03 PM. Devotees can also choose to perform the puja during the Mahanishith Kaal from 11:36 PM on October 20th to 12:27 AM on October 21st.
For those who follow the Lagna system, the auspicious timings are:
- Vrishabh Lagna: 7:12 PM to 9:03 PM
- Kumbh Lagna: 2:36 PM to 4:07 PM
- Singh Lagna: 1:13 AM to 3:54 AM (October 21st)
The Kartik Amavasya tithi began at 3:44 PM today and will conclude at 5:55 PM on October 21st.
Preparations for the Puja:
The essential items for the Diwali puja include idols or pictures of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, materials for making rangoli, a platform (chowki), red or yellow cloth for seating, Ganga jal (holy water), Panchamrit (a mixture of milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and sugar), new clothes and jewelry for the deities, flowers, rice, turmeric, sandalwood, vermillion, lamps, cotton wicks, camphor, sweets, fruits, betel leaves, water in a Kalash, coriander seeds, cowrie shells, and lotus seeds.
Diwali Puja Ritual:
The Diwali night Lakshmi puja is regarded as highly auspicious. Begin by thoroughly cleaning the house and decorating the puja area with flowers and diyas. Place the Lakshmi-Ganesh idols on a red cloth spread over a wooden platform. Sprinkle Ganga Jal for purification. Light the lamp and offer incense, flowers, rice, turmeric, and sweets. Offer lotus flowers and coins to Goddess Lakshmi. Recite the Lakshmi mantra ‘Om Shreem Maha Lakshmyai Namah’ and pray for financial stability. Conclude with the aarti and distribute the prasad among family members.
Post-Diwali Ritual:
According to tradition, the coins and cowrie shells offered during the puja should be tied in a red cloth and kept in the safe or where money is kept. The remaining prasad should be distributed among family members.
