Mumbai, India – Bollywood is in mourning following the passing of veteran actor Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, at the age of 84. The actor, who graced the screen in over 350 Hindi films, died on Monday at Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Mumbai, family sources confirmed. The cause of death has yet to be determined.

Asrani was best known for his iconic role as the jailer in the classic film “Sholay.” His career spanned decades and included roles in numerous hit films such as “Bhool Bhulaiyaa,” “Dhamaal,” “Bunty Aur Babli 2,” and “Hera Pheri.” His comedic timing and unique style made him a beloved figure in Indian cinema.

“Veteran Actor & Director Govardhan Asrani (populary known as Asrani) passed away at Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Mumbai. He was cremated at Shastri Nagar crematorium in Santacruze later in the evening in presence of close people and family members,” Asrani’s manager, Babubhai Theeba, told India TV.

According to sources, Asrani expressed a wish for a quiet farewell. His last rites were performed peacefully at the Shastri Nagar crematorium in Santacruz on Monday evening, attended by family and close friends. In line with the actor’s wishes, the family did not make a formal announcement prior to the cremation.

Asrani’s career, which began in the late 1960s, saw him become a fixture in both commercial blockbusters and critically acclaimed films. He worked extensively with superstar Rajesh Khanna, appearing in over 25 films together. Asrani’s contributions to Hindi cinema, especially his comedic performances, will be fondly remembered. He won two Filmfare Awards for Best Comedian.
