**India Elected to UN Human Rights Council for 2026-28 Term**
**New York – October 15, 2025** – India has secured a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the term spanning 2026-2028. This marks India’s seventh time serving on the Geneva-based body, highlighting its ongoing commitment to global human rights issues.
The UNHRC officially announced the election results on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, confirming India’s three-year term will commence on January 1, 2026.
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, expressed his gratitude to all delegations for their support. In a statement released via social media, he stated that the election reflected India’s “unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms” and that India looks forward to serving this objective during its tenure.
The UNHRC is composed of 47 member states elected by the UN General Assembly, serving three-year terms based on equitable geographical distribution. India previously served on the Council until 2024 and took a mandatory break in 2025 before seeking re-election. The country has been a consistent member since the Council’s inception in 2006, with previous terms in 2006–2007, 2008–2010, 2012–2014, 2015–2017, 2019–2021 and 2022–2024.
Alongside India, Angola, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, Iraq, Italy, Mauritius, Pakistan, Slovenia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam were also elected to the Human Rights Council for the upcoming term.
