Mon Oct 13 19:30:00 UTC 2025: **Nagelsmann Apologizes for Perceived Disrespect Towards Northern Ireland’s Playing Style**
**BELFAST** – Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has offered an apology if his comments about Northern Ireland’s tactics were interpreted as disrespectful ahead of their World Cup qualifier rematch in Belfast. Following Germany’s 3-1 victory over Northern Ireland last month, Nagelsmann remarked that Michael O’Neill’s side favored a long-ball approach that was “not particularly easy on the eyes.”
O’Neill responded by pointing out Germany’s own use of long balls in the previous match. Nagelsmann clarified his statements, stating, “I didn’t mean any disrespect. I said it may not be beautiful to watch but the more important topic, the key topic I mentioned is they do it really well.”
He emphasized that Northern Ireland utilizes long balls with a clear strategy and praised their team spirit, their defensive solidity, and their effectiveness from set-pieces. “So if anybody felt it was disrespectful I can say sorry. I did not mean it as disrespectful, it was with a lot of respect for the team and the way they play,” Nagelsmann added.
Nagelsmann also acknowledged Northern Ireland’s strong performance in their recent 2-0 win over Slovakia, highlighting their ability to create pressure in the final third. He anticipates a challenging match in Belfast, emphasizing the need for strong defensive play and the difficulty in creating counter-attacks against Northern Ireland.
The German coach also addressed the performance of Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz, who scored in the previous match against Northern Ireland, but is yet to find his form following his £116million move. Nagelsmann expressed confidence in Wirtz’s ability to adapt to the Premier League and praised his improved mood. “Probably he can score tomorrow and I will be very happy for him and for us,” he stated.
With both teams level on six points, along with Slovakia, Monday’s match is crucial in the Group A World Cup qualifying campaign.
