**Government Shutdown Looms as Third-Longest in U.S. History Amid Partisan Gridlock**
WASHINGTON – The government shutdown is on Day 13, and House Speaker Mike Johnson warned Monday that the nation is “barreling” toward one of the longest shutdowns in American history unless Democrats concede to a “clean” budget.
Speaking at a press conference, Johnson, R-La., accused Senate Democrats of blocking the GOP’s funding plan six times since the shutdown began on October 1st after they rejected the GOP’s federal funding plan. He emphasized the need for a budget “with no partisan strings attached,” even quoting former President Barack Obama making a similar statement during the 2013 shutdown.
“We’re barreling toward one of the longest shutdowns in American history unless Democrats drop their partisan demands and pass a clean, no-strings-attached budget to reopen the government and pay our federal workers,” Johnson said.
Currently the fifth-longest in U.S. history, this shutdown trails only those of Jimmy Carter (1978), Bill Clinton (1995-96), Barack Obama (2013), and Donald Trump (2018-19). If unresolved, it could soon surpass the Obama-era shutdown to become the third-longest.
Republicans have proposed a seven-week continuing resolution (CR) extending fiscal year 2025 funding levels through November 21st, giving lawmakers more time to negotiate a longer-term agreement. The CR includes minimal policy riders, save for added security funding for lawmakers. It passed the House with mostly partisan support on September 19.
Democrats, angered by being excluded from initial funding talks, are demanding that any spending deal include an extension of COVID-19-era enhanced Obamacare subsidies set to expire this year. The partisan standoff continues, leaving federal workers and essential government services in limbo.
