**Donnie Wahlberg Returns to His Roots in ‘Boston Blue,’ a ‘Blue Bloods’ Spinoff**
**October 12, 2025 / 12:00 PM EDT / CBS News**
Fourteen years after captivating audiences as Detective Danny Reagan on CBS’s hit police procedural “Blue Bloods,” Donnie Wahlberg is stepping back into the world of law enforcement, but this time, it’s personal. The actor is set to star in “Boston Blue,” a spinoff series that transplants the familiar procedural format to the city where Wahlberg came of age: Boston.
Wahlberg, now 56, grew up in Dorchester, a working-class neighborhood in Boston, amidst poverty and family chaos, which he claims helped form his understanding of right and wrong. He was even part of Boston’s controversial desegregation bussing program.
“Boston Blue” sees Wahlberg embracing his origins in a new role that mirrors, in some ways, his own life. However, music became Wahlberg’s escape. As a teen, he co-founded New Kids on the Block with his younger brother, Mark. He also helped produced Mark’s hip-hop career.
After New Kids on the Block disbanded, Wahlberg pursued acting, with roles in “The Sixth Sense” and “Band of Brothers.” The actor credits his wife, TV personality Jenny McCarthy, for their similar upbringings and mutual support.
Wahlberg admits he initially hesitated to return to the police drama genre after “Blue Bloods” ended. Ultimately, the opportunity to keep the spirit of his character alive, coupled with the setting of his beloved Boston, proved too compelling to resist. He emphasizes the importance of honoring the loyalty of “Blue Bloods” fans with this new endeavor.
“Boston Blue” premieres [date to be inserted] on CBS.
