**Mavericks Guard Depth in Question as Exum’s Injury Woes Continue**

**DALLAS, TX -** With Kyrie Irving sidelined indefinitely, the Dallas Mavericks’ need for reliable guard depth is paramount. However, the team is already facing challenges as training camp progresses. Dante Exum, signed in the offseason to bolster the backcourt, has missed significant time due to an undisclosed injury.

This latest setback is concerning for Exum, who also battled injuries during last year’s training camp. While the team values Exum’s defensive presence and ability to drive to the basket, his recurring health issues raise questions about his reliability.

Unfortunately for the Mavericks, financial constraints prevent them from easily moving on from Exum. Releasing him would push the team over the second apron threshold, triggering significant limitations in roster flexibility and a hefty luxury tax bill.

The Mavericks have brought in Dennis Smith Jr. and Dalano Banton for training camp, both young players who offer similar skillsets to Exum, albeit with question marks surrounding their shooting. Smith Jr. is a strong perimeter defender and athlete, while Banton possesses impressive size and dribble-drive ability. However, signing either player to the main roster would likely require cutting Brandon Williams, the only Maverick with a partially guaranteed contract.

Williams, despite his own early training camp injury, is expected to play a role in the rotation, given his scoring ability displayed at the end of last season. It seems unlikely that Dallas cuts Williams for Smith Jr. or Banton unless Williams can’t stay healthy for the rest of camp or just flat-out loses his spot by playing terribly in preseason. While Exum has had some great moments in Dallas, his continual health concerns at his age are making it hard to justify why Dallas shouldn’t take a look at a younger guard prospect instead of him, though it doesn’t appear like that will be happening anytime soon, since they can’t sign anyone else to a veteran minimum deal if they cut Exum.

The Mavericks are hoping Exum can overcome his injury struggles, as he projects to be their primary point guard and a key perimeter defender. However, the team’s options are limited due to salary cap constraints, leaving them in a tricky situation as they prepare for the upcoming season.
