**Portugal Aim to Solidify World Cup Qualifying Lead Against Struggling Ireland**

**LISBON, Portugal** – Portugal will look to tighten their grip on Group F in the UEFA qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup when they host the Republic of Ireland at the Estadio Jose Alvalade on Saturday, October 11, at 7:45 PM (18:45 GMT).

Fresh off their UEFA Nations League triumph earlier this year, Portugal have made a strong start to their World Cup qualifying campaign, securing victories in both of their opening matches: a resounding 5-0 win over Armenia and a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Hungary.

Meanwhile, the Republic of Ireland are desperate for a win after a disappointing start. They managed a 2-2 draw against 10-man Hungary in their opener, thanks to a late equalizer from Adam Idah, but followed that with a 2-1 defeat to Armenia.

“We know that we need to have almost a perfect game to get something from this match,” said Republic of Ireland coach Heimir Hallgrimsson. “If we do, we have a chance to steal a point or to win the game.”

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez praised Cristiano Ronaldo’s enduring dedication, saying, “With him, the next morning is an opportunity to become better and win again. This is unique. I cannot explain it.”

Portugal has won nine of the 16 previous encounters between the two nations, including a 3-0 friendly victory in June 2024. Ireland’s last win against Portugal was in 2005.

Portugal will be without Joao Neves and Joao Cancelo due to injury, while Ireland are facing an injury crisis, with Matt Doherty, Jason Knight, Bosun Lawal, Callum O’Dowda and Sammie Szmodics all sidelined. Troy Parrott returns to the Ireland squad after recovering from injury.

A win for Portugal would solidify their position at the top of Group F, while Ireland desperately need a victory to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

**Predicted Lineups:**

* **Portugal:** Costa; Dalot, Dias, Inacio, Mendes; Bernardo, Vitinha, Fernandes; Conceicao, Ronaldo, Neto
* **Ireland:** Kelleher; O’Brien, O’Shea, Collins; Ogbene; Cullen, Knight, Manning; Taylor, Azaz; Ferguson
