**Wuhan, China** – In a stunning upset at the Dongfeng Voyah · Wuhan Open, Italy’s Jasmine Paolini delivered a dominant performance, defeating world No. 2 Iga Swiatek 6-1, 6-2. The victory propels Paolini into the semifinals and significantly boosts her chances of securing the final qualifying spot for the prestigious WTA Finals in Riyadh.

Prior to this quarterfinal clash, Paolini had suffered six consecutive losses against Swiatek, managing to win only a single set. However, on Friday night, the 29-year-old Italian showcased exceptional form, dismantling Swiatek’s game in a mere 65 minutes. Paolini’s aggressive playstyle, marked by powerful returns and precise shot placement, kept Swiatek on the defensive throughout the match. Paolini remarkably registered only three unforced errors.

“Finally I won a match,” Paolini said in her on-court interview. “I’m super happy about my level. Just feels amazing.”

Paolini will now face No. 3 Coco Gauff in the semifinals. Gauff secured her spot with an efficient 6-3, 6-0 victory over Laura Siegemund. Gauff leads all Hologic WTA Tour players with 15 victories in China over the past two years.

The victory also marks a milestone for Paolini, securing her 41st WTA Tour main-draw win of the year, surpassing her previous year’s record. Paolini now has 26 WTA 1000 wins this year, tied for second with Aryna Sabalenka behind Swiatek’s 28.

Meanwhile, Jessica Pegula has officially qualified for the WTA Finals following her quarterfinal win and Elena Rybakina’s earlier loss to Aryna Sabalenka.
