**Man Charged in Pacific Palisades Fire That Devastated Los Angeles**

LOS ANGELES, CA – Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, has been charged with starting the devastating fire that ripped through the Pacific Palisades neighborhood in January, authorities announced Wednesday. The blaze, which reignited on January 7th after smoldering underground for several days, claimed the lives of 12 people and destroyed over 6,000 homes and buildings.

According to acting US Attorney Bill Essayli, Rinderknecht allegedly ignited a fire on New Year’s Day which was initially extinguished but continued to burn beneath the surface. Fueled by high winds, the fire exploded days later, tearing through the affluent coastal community and leaving behind a trail of destruction.

Essayli stated that Rinderknecht fled the scene of the initial fire but returned to watch it burn. During questioning, he reportedly lied about his location, claiming he was at the bottom of the hiking trail.

Rinderknecht was arrested in Florida on Tuesday and is awaiting court proceedings. The specific method he allegedly used to start the initial fire on January 1st has not been disclosed by investigators.

The investigation revealed the fire was intentionally set, most likely with a lighter used on vegetation or paper. Investigators ruled out other potential causes, including fireworks, lightning, power lines, and discarded cigarettes.

The catastrophic fire prompted an outside review that identified shortcomings in the county’s emergency response. The review highlighted outdated policies, inconsistent practices, and vulnerabilities in communication that hampered evacuation efforts.

The investigation into a second deadly fire, the Eaton Fire in Altadena, which occurred the same day and killed 18 people, remains ongoing.
