Wed Oct 08 16:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Florida Man Arrested in Connection to Deadly 2025 Palisades Fire
**Los Angeles, CA** – A 29-year-old Florida man, Jonathan Rinderknecht, has been arrested and charged with arson in connection to the devastating Palisades Fire that tore through the Los Angeles area in January 2025, leaving 12 people dead and thousands of homes destroyed. Rinderknecht is facing a federal charge of destruction of property by means of fire, according to Acting U.S. Attorney for Southern California, Bill Essayli.
At the time of the fire, Rinderknecht resided in the Palisades neighborhood. Investigators believe he started the blaze on the morning of January 7th after dropping off an Uber passenger on New Year’s Eve and walking up a nearby trail. Authorities also revealed that Rinderknecht allegedly generated an image of a burning city using the AI program ChatGPT before the fire.
“The investigation into the Palisades Fire of January 2025 was lengthy, complex and extremely thorough,” said Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell at a Wednesday news conference.
The investigation revealed that the Palisades Fire was a “holdover” fire, originating from the remnants of an earlier blaze, the Lachman Fire, which had been suppressed on January 1st. Investigators say the Lachman Fire continued to smolder underground within the root structure of dense vegetation.
Essayli stated that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives determined the fire “was ignited with an open flame.” He also noted inconsistencies in Rinderknecht’s initial 911 call to report the fire. “It took the defendant several tries to contact 911 to report the fire,” Essayli said. “He fled the scene in his car, but turned around after passing fire engines driving in the opposite direction to fight the fire.”
The investigation, led by 15 members of the ATF’s National Response Team, involved agents meticulously combing through thousands of acres of fire debris.
The Palisades Fire, which ranks as the ninth deadliest wildfire in California history, burned more than 23,000 acres and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses. The fire is anticipated to be among the costliest wildfires in U.S. history.
Rinderknecht is expected to appear in federal court Wednesday afternoon. Essayli declined to comment on the suspect’s motive.
“While we cannot undo the damage and destruction that was done, we hope his arrest and the charges against him bring some measure of justice to the victims of this horrific tragedy,” Essayli said in a social media post.
