**Beverly Hills, CA** – Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s dedication to his role as MMA pioneer Mark Kerr in the upcoming A24 film, “The Smashing Machine,” has earned the ultimate validation: the approval of Kerr himself and his family.
During a media roundtable, Johnson recounted the intense physical and emotional transformation he underwent to portray Kerr. He gained 30 pounds of specialized muscle, trained in MMA, and donned hours of prosthetics daily. Johnson worked with a voice coach to mimic Kerr’s soft, tender voice.
Kerr shared an emotional anecdote about his son’s reaction to seeing Johnson’s performance. “Dad, he walks like you. He looks like you. He talks like you,” Kerr’s son reportedly whispered after seeing a preview. He even added, “Dad, he’s even got your heart.”
The praise moved Kerr to tears. “It’s just one where, if anybody on the planet can validate [Johnson’s performance], it would be my son,” he said.
“The Smashing Machine,” directed by Benny Safdie, explores a similar period in Kerr’s life as the 2002 documentary of the same name. Safdie aimed to create a film that was “in direct conversation” with the original. Johnson, however, wanted to create a love letter to Mark Kerr and lost friends to pills and drugs.
Johnson’s transformation wasn’t just physical. He sought to understand Kerr’s mindset and convey his confidence on screen. The film also delves into Kerr’s relationship with his ex-wife, Dawn Staples, played by Emily Blunt.
“The Smashing Machine” hits theaters Friday. Critics already praise Johnson’s performance as one of his best.
