Sun Oct 05 06:21:03 UTC 2025: **Headline: Indian-Origin Man Extradited from U.S. to Canada in Connection to 2021 Assault**

**Ontario, Canada – October 5, 2025** – Sukhpreet Singh, a 25-year-old man of Indian origin, has been extradited from Texas to Canada in connection with the 2021 assault of Elnaz Hajtamiri, Canadian media outlets are reporting. Singh was apprehended in June of this year by the United States Marshals Service and formally charged in August.

York Regional Police confirmed that Singh, who arrived in York Region on Tuesday, faces charges of aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. A Canada-wide warrant for his arrest was issued in 2023 after he was identified as a suspect in the violent attack on Hajtamiri, which occurred in an underground parking garage in Richmond Hill.

Previously, in 2022 and 2023, seven other suspects were arrested in connection to the case, including Hajtamiri’s ex-boyfriend, Mohamad Lilo. Those suspects face charges ranging from assault and attempted murder to attempted kidnapping.

Hajtamiri was abducted from Wasaga Beach on January 12, 2022, weeks after the Richmond Hill assault. Her whereabouts remain unknown. York Regional Police and Ontario Provincial Police are continuing their investigation into Hajtamiri’s disappearance and have offered a CAD 100,000 reward for information leading to her recovery.

The other suspects in the case are Harshdeep Binner, Riyasat Singh, Harshpreet Sekhon, Akash Rana, and Jaspreet Singh. This extradition brings the total number of individuals charged in the case to eight.

**Analysis from The View From India:**

From an Indian perspective, this case highlights the complexities of cross-border crime and extradition treaties. While the crime itself is a local Canadian issue, the involvement of an individual of Indian origin residing in the US brings international dimensions into the picture. The news raises important questions regarding law enforcement cooperation between different countries to bring individuals to justice.
