**Kobe Bryant Jersey Fetches $889,000 at Auction; Jerry West Jersey Sells for Over $500K**
**NEW YORK, NY** – A piece of basketball history went under the hammer at Sotheby’s this week, as Kobe Bryant’s first No. 24 Los Angeles Lakers jersey sold for a staggering $889,000, including buyer’s premium. The jersey, worn by Bryant during a November 3, 2006, victory against the Seattle Supersonics where he scored 23 points, is signed and inscribed “FIRST 24” and “1/1” with an Upper Deck hologram, and was photo-matched to the Lakers’ 2006 media day.
This sale follows Sotheby’s record-breaking April auction where a Bryant rookie jersey sold for $7 million, becoming the most expensive Bryant jersey ever sold.
The same auction also saw a jersey worn by Lakers legend Jerry West from 1964 to 1967 fetch $533,400. Photo-matching confirmed the jersey was worn during crucial games, including Game 6 of the 1965 and 1966 Western Division Finals and Game 2 of the 1966 NBA Finals. The lot included a warm-up jacket, shorts, and socks believed to be game-worn and were originally given to former Lakers trainer Frank O’Neill.
While the West jersey sale didn’t break the record for a West item which sold for $868,000 in May, the auction demonstrates the enduring value of basketball memorabilia.
In related news, a jersey worn by hockey icon Wayne Gretzky in his final NHL game went unsold at the same Sotheby’s auction. Bidding failed to meet the reserve price.
