**Selfie Craze Blamed for Drowning Accidents, Warns Social Activist**

**Moodbidri, October 4, 2025** – Social activist Eshwar Malpe, renowned for his work in rescuing people and retrieving bodies from water, has cautioned against the dangers of taking selfies, particularly among young people. Speaking at the inauguration of Saptika Forum, a student-led initiative at Alva’s College (Autonomous) in Moodbidri, Mr. Malpe emphasized the need for self-restraint and awareness of the risks involved.

“Many accidents happen because of the craze for selfies, especially among youngsters and children,” Mr. Malpe stated. He shared his personal journey of using his swimming skills to serve society, rescuing people and recovering bodies from rivers and seas. He highlighted the tragic number of drowning cases during the recent monsoon season, where only a small percentage of lives could be saved.

Mr. Malpe also emphasized his commitment to social causes, noting that honorariums received at events are donated, and an ambulance is provided annually in memory of his son. “Serving society doesn’t require grand gestures; even small acts can make a real difference,” he said.

Vivek Alva, managing trustee of Alva’s Education Foundation, encouraged students to participate in social work. Principal Kurian stressed the importance of understanding the root of problems in social work to ensure effective action. The event was attended by administrative officers, department heads, forum coordinators, and student representatives.
