Thu Oct 02 17:32:37 UTC 2025: ## Durga Puja Idols Immersed Across West Bengal Amidst Festive Grandeur and Inclement Weather

**Kolkata, October 2, 2025** – The vibrant Durga Puja festival drew to a close across West Bengal today with the immersion of idols in rivers and waterbodies. Despite overcast skies and intermittent rainfall due to a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, devotees participated in the rituals with traditional fervor and grandeur.

In Kolkata, the immersion of idols commenced in the afternoon, with elaborate arrangements made at ghats along the Hooghly river. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) designated five ghats for special surveillance, while the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK), continued its 15-year tradition of assisting in the removal of immersed idols to prevent pollution of the river.

The SMPK deployed barge-mounted cranes, launches, and manpower to remove idols and debris from the water, ensuring the Hooghly river remained clean. Similar immersion ceremonies were held across the state, including at Taki in North 24 Parganas, where idols were immersed in the Ichamati river along the India-Bangladesh border under tight security.

The immersion of idols and the traditional ‘Sindoor Khela’ ritual were partially disrupted by rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rain for Birbhum districts of South Bengal on Friday, along with squally winds along the Odisha coast.

Despite the weather challenges, the immersion of idols is expected to continue over the next few days. The State government has organised a Durga Puja carnival on Sunday, featuring over 100 major pujas from Kolkata, along with similar events planned in various districts.
