**HOLLYWOOD** – Martin Scorsese has officially set his sights on his next directorial project: an adaptation of Peter Cameron’s ghost story novel, “What Happens at Night,” and he’s bringing some major star power along for the ride. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence are attached to star in the film, with production slated to begin as early as January.
Sources tell Deadline that Apple Original Films is in negotiations to finance and produce the project in partnership with Studiocanal, who developed the script written by Patrick Marber. The pairing of Scorsese and DiCaprio continues a fruitful collaboration, as Apple backed their recent epic, “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The studio also has first-look deals with both Scorsese’s Sikelia and DiCaprio’s Appian Way production companies.
“What Happens at Night” follows an American couple (DiCaprio and Lawrence) traveling to a remote, snow-covered European town to adopt a baby. They find themselves in a desolate hotel filled with enigmatic characters, including a flamboyant singer, a corrupt businessman, and a charismatic faith healer. As they navigate this surreal landscape and struggle to claim their child, the couple begins to question their own identities and the foundation of their relationship.
The film promises a blend of suspense and psychological intrigue, reminiscent of Scorsese and DiCaprio’s previous collaboration on “Shutter Island.” Lawrence, fresh off her role in “Die, My Love,” produced by Scorsese, adds further gravitas to the already impressive lineup.
With three Oscar winners leading the charge, and Apple likely to secure distribution, “What Happens at Night” is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of the coming years. Stay tuned for further casting announcements and details on the film’s release.
