**Washington D.C.** – Former President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday, setting the stage for a deal that could transfer majority ownership of TikTok to American hands. While details are still being finalized, the agreement, which Trump says is “American-operated all the way,” aims to address long-standing concerns about the popular video-sharing app’s Chinese ownership.
“I have great respect for President Xi, and I very much appreciate that he approved the deal, because to get it done properly, we really needed the support of China and the approval of China,” Trump said during the signing.
While the complete list of investors remains unclear, Trump indicated that Oracle, along with co-founder Larry Ellison, will play a “big” role. He also mentioned tech entrepreneur Michael Dell and media mogul Rupert Murdoch as potential participants. Vice President JD Vance stated further details will be revealed in the coming weeks.
The deal would grant the U.S. control over TikTok’s algorithm, which determines the content users see. When asked if he’d like to see more MAGA-related content suggested, Trump quipped, “I always like MAGA-related,” but assured that all viewpoints would be treated fairly.
The move follows years of scrutiny of TikTok from politicians and security experts, citing concerns that its parent company, ByteDance, could share user data with the Chinese government and potentially manipulate public opinion through the algorithm. This culminated in a bipartisan bill signed by President Biden last year, requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok to an American company or face a ban, which was ultimately delayed through executive orders.
Trump has been vocal about the positive benefits that TikTok has for small business owners stating that they played a part in wanting to close the deal “Small businesses have become very successful because of TikTok, and we didn’t think of that,” he said.
Despite past efforts to ban the app, which boasts an estimated 170 million U.S. users, many lawmakers have softened their stance, acknowledging its widespread popularity and importance for businesses. Trump himself, who previously sought to ban TikTok during his first term, has since joined the platform in an effort to reach younger voters. The final deal deadline is set for December 16th.
