**Income Tax Deadline Extended to October 31st Following Disruptions**
**New Delhi – September 25, 2025:** The Income Tax Department announced today an extension to the deadline for submitting audit reports for the 2024-25 fiscal year. Taxpayers now have until October 31st to file, a one-month extension from the original September 30th deadline.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) cited representations from professional associations, including chartered accountant bodies, as the reason for the extension. These groups highlighted difficulties faced by taxpayers in completing their audit reports on time, particularly due to disruptions caused by recent floods and other natural calamities in various regions of India. These events have significantly hampered normal business and professional activities. The CBDT also noted that these concerns had been raised in various High Courts.
Despite acknowledging the challenges, the CBDT clarified that the Income-Tax e-filing portal is operating smoothly and without technical glitches. They emphasized that more than 7.57 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) have already been filed as of September 23, 2025, with over 4.02 lakh tax audit reports uploaded by September 24th. The Board further stated that the system remains stable and fully functional, allowing for the submission of various statutory forms and reports.
This extension follows a previous one-day extension granted on September 15th for filing ITRs by individuals and those not subject to audit, triggered by earlier portal issues.
