**Kokrajhar, Assam** – The fate of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) hangs in the balance as vote counting commenced today, determining which party will control the tribal region of Assam. The election has seen a fractured contest, with current NDA allies the BJP, United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) vying for power.
Counting began at 8 am across all Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) districts under the supervision of District Commissioners and Returning Officers. Authorities carried out randomization of counting staff prior to the start to ensure a transparent process.
Early trends indicate a tight race between the BPF, BJP, and UPPL. Key figures are facing unexpected challenges. Current BTC Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro (UPPL) trails in one of his contested constituencies (Dotma), while leading in Goibari. Similarly, Deputy Chief Minister Gobinda Basumatary is currently behind in Bhairabkunda. BPF Chief Hagrama Mohilary is also trailing in the Debargaon constituency, with UPPL candidate Khampa Borgayari currently holding a lead of over 700 votes after the fourth round of counting.
The BTC comprises 40 seats across five districts: Kokrajhar, Chirang, Udalguri, Baksa, and Tamulpur. Kokrajhar district alone accounts for 12 constituencies, with a total of 100 candidates contesting those seats. Overall, 316 candidates are competing for a place in the council.
The outcome of this election will determine the next ruling formation of the BTC and the future of the Bodoland Territorial Region. Stay tuned for further updates as results continue to unfold.
