**’One Piece’ Flag Becomes Symbol of Protest in Philippines**

**Manila, Philippines – September 23, 2025** – The Straw Hat Jolly Roger from the popular anime “One Piece” has become a potent symbol of protest in the Philippines, mirroring its recent use in demonstrations in Indonesia and Nepal. The flag was prominently displayed at mass rallies on September 21st, the anniversary of Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s declaration of martial law in 1972, a date of deep historical significance for Filipinos.

Tens of thousands gathered on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Manila for the “Trillion Peso March,” organized to protest corruption allegedly linked to flood-control projects. Demonstrators, largely peaceful, waved the Straw Hat Pirates’ Jolly Roger alongside the national flag, chanting calls for President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to resign.

The choice of date, and the anime flag, were no accident. Organizers deliberately chose the martial law anniversary to draw parallels between the current administration and the authoritarian rule of Marcos Sr. Protesters like student Nico, selling straw hats at Luneta Park, stated that they were following Luffy (the main character in One Piece), who keeps fighting for what is right.

While the main demonstration remained peaceful, tensions flared near the presidential palace. A youth-led contingent clashed with police, setting a trailer truck on fire and throwing stones, resulting in the use of water cannons by authorities.

The “One Piece” flag’s appearance marks a growing trend amongst Gen Z protesters across Asia. It has become a symbol for rebellion and unity, first emerging in Indonesia over elite privileges and military rule revisions, and later in Nepal amidst protests against corruption and wealth flaunted by political dynasties.

Beyond Asia, the flag has also been seen at rallies in France against budget cuts, highlighting its resonance with younger generations who view “One Piece” as a call for radical change.
