Tallinn, Estonia – Estonia has called for a NATO meeting and a UN Security Council discussion after reporting that three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated its airspace for 12 minutes on Friday. Russia has vehemently denied the accusation, labeling it “empty, unfounded” and a deliberate attempt to escalate tensions.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed Estonia’s claims, stating that Tallinn provided no “objective monitoring data” to support its assertion. The Russian Ministry of Defence further asserted that its pilots operate in full compliance with international law.

The alleged incursion occurred shortly after a separate incident where 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace, prompting a response from NATO jets. These events have heightened anxieties across Europe, particularly in nations bordering Russia and Ukraine, raising concerns about a potential spillover of the ongoing conflict.

NATO representatives are scheduled to meet on Tuesday to discuss the incident and potentially invoke Article 4 of the alliance’s charter, which mandates consultations among member states when their security is threatened. This would be the third time Article 4 has been invoked since the start of the Ukraine war.

Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized that Poland would not hesitate to shoot down objects violating its territory. However, he cautioned against rash actions in ambiguous situations, such as the recent flight of Russian jets near the Petrobaltic platform, where no actual airspace violation occurred. Tusk also stressed the importance of ensuring international support before taking any actions that could escalate the conflict.
