Sat Sep 20 19:10:23 UTC 2025: ## Hungary Calls on EU to Designate Antifa as Terrorist Group, Cites US Example

**Brussels, Belgium** – Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto is urging the European Union to classify antifa as a terrorist organization, citing alleged terrorist attacks across Europe and echoing calls made by former US President Donald Trump. In a letter to EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas, Szijjarto demanded action against the anti-fascist movement, pointing to incidents in Germany, France, Italy, and even Hungary.

“Individuals and groups linked to the so-called Antifa ideology have carried out numerous terrorist attacks across the European Union,” Szijjarto wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter), excerpts of which were included in the letter. He specifically highlighted the case of Italian MEP Ilaria Salis, who was arrested in Budapest in 2023 while participating in a counter-protest against a neo-Nazi commemoration and later elected to the European Parliament.

Szijjarto asserted that these actions prove antifa constitutes a “grave threat,” and urged the EU to follow the lead of former US President Trump, who previously moved to label antifa as a “major terrorist organization.” He argued that the EU should “align its steps with the US, the leading force in the global fight against terrorism.”

Antifa, short for “anti-fascists,” is a decentralized network of left-wing activists and organizations that confront right-wing and fascist movements. The group is not a single, unified entity.

This move comes amid growing political polarization across Europe and increasing scrutiny of various activist groups. The EU has yet to respond to Szijjarto’s request.
