**Pakistan Drops Boycott Threat, Plays UAE After Dispute Over Match Referee**
**Dubai, UAE -** Pakistan’s cricket team took the field against the United Arab Emirates in a crucial Asia Cup match Wednesday after a day of drama and threats of withdrawal. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had protested the presence of match referee Andy Pycroft, accusing him of “violating the Spirit of Cricket” during the India-Pakistan match on September 14th.
The PCB alleged that Pycroft prohibited Pakistani captain Salman from shaking hands with Indian captain Suryakumar and prevented the exchange of team sheets during the toss. They demanded his removal from the tournament.
However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected the PCB’s demands, stating that a review found Pycroft acted according to ICC rules and the Spirit of Cricket. The ICC explained that Pycroft was simply conveying instructions from tournament organizers aimed at maintaining the integrity of the toss.
According to an ICC source, the PCB sent an email to the ICC on September 15, complaining about an “incident” at the toss. The PCB continued to press for Pycroft’s removal, even threatening to withdraw from the Asia Cup. The Asian Cricket Council also requested for his removal, but was rejected as well.
Pycroft, on his own accord, facilitated a meeting with the Pakistani captain and team manager, expressing regret for any miscommunication, but reiterating that he had only relayed messages from the venue manager and had not violated any code of conduct.
The ICC confirmed that it received another email from the PCB on September 17, requesting a formal inquiry into alleged Code of Conduct violations during the India vs. Pakistan match on 15 September and subsequent incidents. The ICC responded by requesting that the PCB provide specific evidence to demonstrate any violation and is awaiting further information.
Despite the ongoing dispute, Pakistan ultimately decided to participate in the match against the UAE, averting a major crisis in the Asia Cup. The incident caused a delay to the start of the match.
