**Jury to Begin Deliberations in Suni Bell Murder Trial After Contentious Closing Arguments**

**TAMPA, Fla. –** After a week of testimony, jury deliberations are set to begin Tuesday in the trial of five men accused of the August 2021 shooting death of 4-year-old Suni Bell.

The state and defense delivered their closing statements Monday, but proceedings were briefly disrupted when defendant Zvante Sampson erupted in court, shouting, “Somebody shot at me. Somebody shot back.” Sampson was removed from the courtroom after claiming self-defense, a claim prosecutors refute. He was allowed to watch the remainder of the trial from a holding cell.

Prosecutors allege that Sampson, along with Jaylin Bedward, James Denson, Quandarious Hammond, and Andrew Thompson, ambushed the car carrying Suni Bell, her mother Mary Harrison, and her uncle Willy Brown, firing approximately 40 bullets. The family was returning from a celebration of life and searching for a gathering place when the defendants, allegedly watching them from a nearby gas station, followed and attacked their vehicle. Suni Bell died later at the hospital; her mother and uncle survived.

The five men are charged with murder. While being tried together, each defendant will be evaluated individually. The prosecution argued the attack was a coordinated “team effort” and that they do not need to prove who fired the fatal shot.

Defense attorneys countered that the state’s evidence is largely circumstantial and that there is no definitive proof tying the fatal bullet to any specific defendant or weapon. They have repeatedly requested the charges be dropped, a request that was denied. Several defendants have attempted to argue that they were returning fire after being shot at first, but the prosecution maintains there is no evidence of self-defense.

All defense teams rested their case without calling any witnesses. The jury will receive instructions Tuesday morning before beginning deliberations. The outcome of the trial hinges on whether the jury believes the prosecution has proven the men acted together in the death of Suni Bell.
