NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Severe weather swept through Hampton Roads and northeastern North Carolina on Tuesday, leaving tens of thousands without power. Dominion Energy crews scrambled throughout the day to restore electricity as heavy rain and strong winds caused widespread outages.
At the height of the storm around 5:30 p.m., Dominion Energy reported approximately 30,000 customers without power in southeastern Virginia. Virginia Beach bore the brunt of the impact, with roughly 26,000 outages. Norfolk also saw significant disruptions, with about 6,500 customers affected as of 6:30 p.m.
By 11 p.m., Dominion Energy crews had made progress, reducing the total number of outages in southeastern Virginia to 15,450. However, significant portions of Virginia Beach, including Chic’s Beach, Bayside, Thoroughgood, and the Shore Drive area, remained without power. Outages were particularly concentrated along Shore Drive near Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, First Landing State Park, and along North Great Neck Road.
Earlier in the day, nearly 5,000 Norfolk residents were impacted by outages, particularly in the Ocean View and Camellia Gardens areas. Power was initially expected to be restored by mid-morning, and crews successfully reduced the number of outages to 350 by 9:30 a.m.
Griggs Elementary School in Currituck County also experienced an outage, but power was restored by 9:10 a.m.
A&N Electric Cooperative reported over 2,100 customers without power on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, with the majority concentrated in Chincoteague. While service was restored to Northampton County by Tuesday evening, challenges remain on the Eastern Shore.
