Wed Sep 17 06:37:23 UTC 2025: ## Maharashtra Doctors to Strike Over Homoeopathic Practitioners Practicing Allopathy
**Mumbai, September 17, 2025 (The Hindu)** – The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Maharashtra has announced a state-wide token strike on September 18th in protest of the Maharashtra Medical Council’s (MMC) decision to launch a portal for the registration of doctors qualified with the Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP). This course allows homoeopathic practitioners with one year of pharmacology training to practice allopathy, a move strongly opposed by the IMA and other medical associations.
The IMA warns of escalating the agitation, including a “Long March” to Azad Maidan in Mumbai and an indefinite hunger strike if the government doesn’t reverse its decision. They argue that allowing homoeopathic practitioners to practice allopathy is unacceptable and undermines the expertise of trained allopathic doctors.
IMA State President Santosh Kadam condemned the government’s “sudden U-turn” and stated that the decision has caused “shock and dismay among the modern medicine fraternity.” The IMA emphasizes that the issue is currently under judicial review by the Bombay High Court, and granting registration before the court’s verdict is legally questionable.
Other medical associations, including the Maharashtra State Medical Teachers Association (MSMTA), Maharashtra Government Medical Officers Association (MAGMO), and Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), also oppose the move. Resident doctors at government medical colleges participated in a silent protest on Tuesday, wearing black ribbons to urge the government to reconsider.
This decision follows a previous notification by the MMC on June 30th, which was subsequently stayed by the Chief Minister. The IMA argues that homoeopathic doctors should be registered with their own council, not the MMC. This ongoing dispute threatens to disrupt healthcare services across Maharashtra if a resolution is not reached.
