Tue Sep 16 05:20:00 UTC 2025: **Michigan Family Speaks Out After Mother of Son’s Ex-Girlfriend Revealed as Cyberstalker in Netflix Doc**
Beal City, MI – Jill and Dave McKenny, residents of Beal City, Michigan, are sharing their harrowing experience with cyberstalking in the new Netflix documentary, “Unknown Number: The High School Catfish.” The film chronicles the ordeal their son, Owen, endured, and the shocking revelation that the perpetrator was Kendra Licari, the mother of his then-girlfriend, Lauryn.
In October 2020, Owen, then 13, and Lauryn began receiving disturbing and explicit text messages from anonymous numbers. The messages, which briefly subsided before escalating again in September 2021, included sexually suggestive content aimed at Owen and insults directed at Lauryn. The McKennys, along with Lauryn’s parents, Kendra and Shawn Licari, initially banded together to try and identify the stalker. Jill McKenny and Kendra Licari formed a close bond as they investigated the messages, unaware of the truth.
However, after months of frustration, the FBI stepped in and traced the messages back to Kendra Licari. The discovery sent shockwaves through the small community and left the McKennys reeling from betrayal.
“I can’t ever get that feeling out of me. Just the disgust and the betrayal this woman we allowed into our lives and our house and our kids lives, and you just can’t imagine what that felt like,” Jill McKenny said in the documentary.
Kendra Licari was arrested in December 2022 and later pleaded guilty to two counts of stalking a minor. In April 2023, she was sentenced to 19 months to five years in prison. She was released on parole in August 2024 and has since shared her side of the story in the documentary.
Jill and Dave McKenny, along with Owen, now 18 and a recent graduate of Beal City High School, speak candidly about the impact of the cyberstalking and the devastating fallout in “Unknown Number: The High School Catfish.” The documentary also explores the suspicions that were directed towards another classmate, Khloe Wilson, and the lasting impact on her and her family.
The McKennys continue to reside in Michigan with their daughter, Macy. Owen McKenny is set to attend Hope College in Holland, Michigan, to play baseball. The family has had no contact with the Licaris since Kendra’s arrest.
