Hyderabad, India – A sudden and intense downpour struck Hyderabad on Sunday evening, inundating roads and causing havoc across the city. Authorities reported a staggering 12 cm of rainfall within a single hour, leading to widespread flooding and multiple incidents of people going missing in overflowing drains.
Tragedy struck in Habib Nagar where two men, a father-in-law and son-in-law, were swept away in the Afzal Sagar canal. The son-in-law reportedly disappeared while attempting to rescue his relative. Police are currently conducting search and rescue operations.
In Musheerabad, a 26-year-old man identified as Sunny was also swept into a drain after a wall collapsed near Vinoba Colony. Despite efforts from his friends to rescue him with ropes, he was carried away by the strong current. Emergency services, including the GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) and police, are on site, and local residents are assisting in the search.
Numerous areas including Yousufguda, Sheikpet, Rayadurgam, Rajendranagar, Jubilee Hills, Khairatabad, Ameerpet, Musheerabad, Ramnagar, Tarnaka, LB Nagar, Kachiguda, Kushaiguda, and Kapra experienced significant flooding. Major roads have been transformed into virtual lakes, causing severe traffic disruptions and making it difficult for motorists to navigate.
GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, accompanied by officials, inspected the flood-affected areas in Banjara Hills. She assured residents that efforts are underway to alleviate the situation.
Waterlogging has also been reported on the national highway in Miyapur Madinaguda and near the Ashok Nagar steel bridge, causing major traffic jams. In Secunderabad’s Kavadiguda Padmashali Colony, floodwaters entered homes, causing further distress.
The GHMC and hydra teams are working to clear waterlogged roads in Banjara Hills and at the Command Control Center, striving to restore normalcy to the affected areas. Residents are advised to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel until the situation improves.
