Gaza City – Twenty-three months into the conflict between Israel and Hamas, the Gaza Strip lies in ruins, with a staggering death toll, widespread displacement, and a declared famine. Over 64,000 Palestinians, 2.8% of Gaza’s pre-war population, have been killed, including more than 18,000 children. A further 160,000, over 7% of the population, have been wounded. Nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced, many multiple times.
The United Nations officially declared a famine in Gaza on August 22, 2025, after months of warnings about a looming humanitarian catastrophe. Aid deliveries have been severely hampered, with reports of at least 1,300 Palestinians killed while seeking food at aid centers since May. Dozens of children have reportedly died from starvation and malnutrition. UNICEF reports that Gaza has the highest number of child amputees per capita in the world.
The scale of the devastation has intensified accusations that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians. Under the UN Convention, genocide includes acts committed with the intent to destroy a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group, including causing serious harm, inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about physical destruction, preventing births, and forcibly transferring children.
Israel launched its military operation in Gaza following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that killed at least 1,200 people in Israel and resulted in the capture of 251 hostages. The stated goals were the destruction of Hamas and the release of the hostages. While 148 hostages have been released and the bodies of 56 returned during ceasefires, around 50 remain in captivity, and Hamas remains a significant force in the region.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has rejected accusations of genocide, stating that Israel is targeting Hamas. However, efforts to reach a lasting ceasefire have stalled, with Hamas demanding a full Israeli withdrawal and Netanyahu insisting on “total victory.”
The conflict has taken a devastating toll on Gaza’s infrastructure, with over 400,000 homes destroyed and 86% of cropland damaged. Attacks on healthcare facilities and personnel have further crippled the enclave’s ability to cope with the crisis.
As the war continues with no end in sight, the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, raising fears of further loss of life and lasting damage to the region.
